Once you follow them to their counter they will start trying to build a rapport with you in an effort for you to like them, while at the same time they will start giving you all sort of tips about what to do during your vacation, including the best places to change your money, they will give you a map to show you where your hotel is located and teach you how to use public transportation in order for you to avoid taxicabs so you will save money, and even how to save even more by buying beer and soft drinks at a grocery store instead of paying the hotel's prices, all these information is actually very useful and 99% accurate, and the reason why they are giving it to you is to earn your trust.
But actually the information isn't exactly free, once they've given you all the useful information you start to trust them a little bit, once they're done with the information they will ask you what activities you have planned for your vacation and they will start showing the different options that you have from going to the Mayan Ruins, to Lobster dinners, Golf, or Snorkeling trips to Cozumel or Isla Mujeres, etc. and they will tell you the prices for these activities, Once you've answered them what you were thinking of doing they know exactly what they will use to lure you into a presentation,
They will ask you if you would like to save money on your activities to which you will obviously answer yes, and that's when they'll start pitching you their hotel asking you to come and visit the place the next morning for breakfast, and in appreciation of your visit you will receive either the tickets for the activities for free or some sort of discount on the prices, ( it all depends on which hotel they represent and how many people are in your party, since the different hotels give the OPC different options for them to use to lure you in), most likely your first reaction would be to think that there's got to be a catch, and you will be right, but that's where these guys get to work they are very well trained and they are professional liars, If you ask them "Is this a Timeshare?", they will answer that it's not a Timeshare, it's Vacation Club, or a Private Club, or an All Inclusive resort, or some other answer, but the truth is that they all want you for the same reason, to lure you into a hardcore sales presentation.
It will take them a couple of minutes to convince you that there's nothing to worry about until you agree to go, once you do this th
ey will fill up an invitation which will have your name and hotel as well as the number of people in your party, along with the detailed description of whatever they offered you for attending, but right when you think that's it and before they hand you over the invitation they will ask you to leave a deposit which is usually 20 dollars per person, this is to make sure that you will show up, and they will tell you that you will get it back when you arrive at their hotel the next day, this part is completely true whatever amount you give them you will get it back at the hotel once you show up, but if you don't show up you will loose the amount.
After hesitating about it you decide that the guy seems to be trust worthy, and he was so helpful when he gave you all that information about saving money that you agree to give him the deposit. He hands you over the invitation but he gives you one last warning with it, He tells that you shouldn't let anybody know that you have the invitation, specially the guys from the transportation company that is going to drive you to the hotel, and even at your hotel they shouldn't find out that you have it or they will give you a hard time about it, because they don't want you to see another hotel which would mean that you might not come back.
Actually the real reason why they are telling you this is because there's a lot of competition between timeshares or hotels, and there are over a 1000 OPC´S that work for different hotels in Cancun and the Mayan Riviera, and they will try to steal each other's couples or families with any means they can, they are all over the place, at the airport, at the rental car agencies, at the lobby of most hotels in this case they can be portrayed as concierges or guest services employees, at the malls they are disguised as tourist information employees, even at some local restaurants, they're everywhere, but they are all after the same thing YOU.
And that is why the guy at the airport will try to warn you against all of them but only up to a point so that you won't get scared this is called "Burning the couple" in the business, and the competition is so fierce that even the Taxi Drivers sometimes when they detect that the people in their car is going to a presentation they will drive them to a different hotel where they will get 100 dollars for delivering a couple who has no idea that they've been driven to a different place, although I must admit that wherever you end up it will still be a presentation, and they all are very much alike with just a few differences.
