Pigeon Point is a great campsite along the Smith River outside of Willow Creek. It has a rafting put-in spot, a day-use area and also has a few single campsites and a couple group campsites. The campground is separate from the Day use area. There is plenty of shade and the campgrounds are fairly private. The river has a large swimming hole. The large sandy beach area and the few smaller beaches are great for sunbathing and for kids to play. The river stretch in front of the in front of the campground was fairly shallow when I as there at the end of July. It was great for swimming and floating down in our tubes! This spot is also really perfect for fishing, rafting, kayaking, floating and tubing.
To get there drive from east from Willow Creek, California for about 45 minutes. It is about 5 miles east of the town, Big Bar which is a small rafting town.
Amenities
The ca
mpground had two clean and well maintained vault toilets. There were recycling containers and bear proof garbage receptacles. The downside was that it did not have any potable water available. Each campsite had a picnic table and a nice large fire pit and grill. I noticed that a couple of the campsites had broken picnic tables to beware of that when choosing a site. The camping fee was $12 per night for a single campsite. There was no fee for the day-use area.
Animals We Saw
A lot of Lizards, small and big fish, insects and many different bird species. I imagine that bears are around but the fact that there are bear-proof trash and recycling recepticles is a good sign. Bears are not likely to be able to get food from these campsites unless humans are careless.
Overall we had a great time at Pigeon Point and we hope to go back again next Summer! It is a great place to go to get away from it all and enjoy the beauty of nature.
