WILDERNESS SURVIVAL: WHERE ARE WE?

In today's world of shrinking forests and growing urban areas it is important to remember that we all live in one big wilderness area. No matter what our surroundings we need to be cognizant of impending problems and solutions. When in the forested wilderness areas the first order business is to locate shelter, water, food, and then escape or survival. The same is true for urban areas with slight variations in the order. You always have to look to the short term first and then extend that vision to the future. Survive first and then live and prosper.

As always we want a roof over our head. Even if there are no climate concerns the psychological effects can make the difference between success and failure. Weigh your needs then your options. Do you need a simple lean-to, grass hut, or a quarter million dollar home. Satisfy your needs then build from there. Consider the weather, climate, material availability, location, and expandability. Cover your head and keep yourself warm (or cool), but don't put yourself in a flood zone or a neighborhood you can't get out of in a reasonable amount of time. Remember that this is an investment be it a short term hut or life long dream home.

Now you have to find sustenance. Check your water and food cache. Don't be short sighted here as seasons change and a flood can soon become a drought. Game doesn't always stay in one place. Make sure your supplies outweigh the time you plan on being in this location. Stockpile as muc
h as is feasible and make sure to ration as well as possible. Dig an underground food locker to store perishables, dry cure what meat is available, or make sure you have a three month supply of canned goods in the cupboard.

Finally you can plan an escape or a future. You have made sure to set in place your immediate safety and well being, so lets get cracking on an emergency fund. Scout additional hunting, optional food sources, or occupations. See what is out there for you. If times get hard then you want at least a three month back-up plan. Get it in place. Once your short-term goals are set you can get a plan of action to reach your summit. Set your goals high and don't underestimate the power of positive thinking. Keep your body busy and build. A signal fire, a career dream, or your boss's position will suffice. Be creative now that you don't have to worry about your immediate future. Set your compass in the correct direction and start.

The world today is an ever changing place that demands preparedness. Be a Boy Scout. Don't be caught short. Have your plan of action, prepare for the worst, plan for the best, keep your eyes wide open for all possibilities, and above all, be positive. This is your life, your dream, your career, your plan, and your opportunity. Make the most of what you have now so that later you can have the best of what you want now. It is no accident that you are here so don't let an accident put you in dire straits. Now is the time to set yourself up for survival in any wilderness where you happen to end up. Survive first then live and prosper.

Some good thoughts here. If a person fails to plan, he probably plans to fail.
